About half of Canadian employees say they want more feedback and recognition from their managers. That means many workplaces could benefit from spending more time celebrating wins. When employees feel recognized, they’ll be more focused, resilient to stress and likely to bring forward new ideas. Recognition can even improve retention. But how do you creatively recognize employees? Here are five ideasteam recognition examples to help celebrate staffteam accomplishments.
Throw a workplace party
What do you do when there’s cause for celebration? Throw a party, of course! Gather employees for a catered lunch, trip to a restaurant or informal get-together to enjoy each other’s company. A leader can speak to the group about why the occasion is special and acknowledge those who accomplished an important feat.
Publish a social media shout-out
Research shows public recognition is one of the ways employees like to be acknowledged—more than a bonus, raise or promotion. Keep in mind that some employees will not like being the centre of attention, so it’s best to ask how employees feel about the idea of a public celebration before you start.
For those in favour of it, use the department social media channels or website to spread good news. If a group of employees wins a significant award, post a photo of the team with their certificate or honour. Explain the hard work that went into the accomplishment and how it benefits your community. It might give the whole team a lift. And don’t forget to tag employees on each social platform so they can share with their friends and followers and amplify your brand’s reach.
Offer a professional development opportunity
When employees achieve a big victory, help prepare them for the next challenge. Keep an eye out for conferences, seminars, conventions and other happenings that could benefit your team. When timelines sync up, celebrate an accomplishment by adding a learning opportunity to their calendars. Before they head out, gift them each a branded polo shirt or quarter-zip pullover to represent the office or department in style.
Provide extra time off
Some workplace wins are worthy of some extra R&R. Celebrate big accomplishments by inviting employees to take an afternoon off. This can apply to the whole team or just a few individuals. If possible, consider offering a full day off. Whichever way you go, be sure to send a small gift, like a travel mug or crossbody bag.
Give praise in a meeting or email
In a recent Gallup® survey, employees said the most memorable recognition comes from managers (28%) and high-level leaders or CEOs (24%). A shoutout from a department head in a larger meeting or office-wide email could help employees feel appreciated. Give a thorough explanation of the work that went into the achievement and what it means for the big picture. The good vibes could resonate well into the future!
Meaningful recognition can go a long way
While carving out time or resources can be a challenge, there can be great benefits to celebrating team accomplishments—even if that celebration is small. Recognize employees with parties, social posts, learning opportunities, extra time off and public acknowledgement to build positive momentum.
